TEMCO Hospitality Ecosystem’s planned medical tourism development in Gaborone is expected to contribute P2.7 billion to Botswana’s gross domestic product (GDP) over the next decade, according to the company’s spokesperson in Botswana, Segofalang Nagafela.
Nagafela said the project is also projected to generate P422 million in tax revenue and create more than 1,000 jobs once fully operational.
TEMCO Hospitality Ecosystem recently announced the P2 billion specialised healthcare development, which will be located within the Special Economic Zone at Airport City, near Sir Seretse Khama International Airport.
The development will include a 130-bed specialised healthcare facility and a pharmaceutical manufacturing plant. TEMCO said the project has secured a formal investment commitment from United States-based private equity firm Piscal Innovation Private Equity.
Nagafela said the development holds an investor licence from the Special Economic Zones Authority (SEZA) and is designed as an integrated healthcare ecosystem comprising two key components.
“The ecosystem has two arms: the hospital and the pharmaceutical manufacturing facility,” Nagafela said.
She said the hospital will be equipped with state-of-the-art specialised medical facilities aimed at attracting patients from across the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region, positioning Botswana as a regional destination for medical tourism.
Responding to public questions over the decision to locate the hospital near the airport, Nagafela said the development is aligned with the Botswana Economic Transformation Programme (BETP), which identifies economic diversification and medical tourism among the country’s development priorities.
“TEMCO intends to create a medical hub that will serve most of Southern Africa. Soon, we won’t have patients needing a lot of money to fly to other continents for specialised care, some at a very high cost to our struggling government,” she said.
Nagafela said the project forms part of the National Development Plan and has received the green light under the BETP.
The development is expected to strengthen Botswana’s healthcare infrastructure while supporting the country’s broader ambition to diversify its economy and establish itself as a regional hub for specialised medical services.
