The Botswana Investment and Trade Centre (BITC) is moving beyond conversations around sustainability by encouraging businesses to demonstrate measurable environmental performance through the launch of the Green Mark, an Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG)-focused extension of the nationally recognised Pride Mark.
Launched on Tuesday, the Green Mark is designed to recognise businesses that demonstrate tangible progress in integrating sustainability into their operations, placing emphasis on measurable action rather than environmental commitments alone.
According to BITC, the initiative presents Botswana businesses with an opportunity to demonstrate their commitment to sustainability, strengthen their competitiveness and gain recognition for responsible business practices.
An extension of the Pride Mark programme, the Green Mark has been developed to encourage businesses across sectors to embed sustainability principles into their operations while recognising companies that are leading by example.
Its introduction comes at a time when environmental performance and broader ESG considerations are increasingly influencing global competitiveness, investment decisions and long-term business sustainability.
Companies participating in the programme will be recognised for implementing practices that contribute to resource conservation, waste reduction, energy efficiency, environmental compliance and responsible corporate citizenship.
“By recognising businesses that place sustainability at the centre of their operations, the programme seeks to inspire broader adoption of environmentally responsible business practices while supporting Botswana’s long-term economic diversification and climate resilience objectives,” BITC said.
The Centre noted that investors, consumers and international markets increasingly expect businesses to demonstrate measurable commitments to ESG principles. Through the Green Mark, Botswana is seeking to establish a credible national framework that promotes responsible environmental management while strengthening the country’s position as an attractive investment destination.
Speaking at the launch, BITC Chief Executive Officer Keletsositse Olebile described the Green Mark as part of a broader national commitment to developing a sustainable and competitive economy.
“The Green Mark is more than an environmental recognition programme; it is a national commitment to building a more sustainable economy. It reflects Botswana’s vision of creating businesses that are not only competitive and profitable, but also environmentally responsible and future-focused,” Olebile said.
He noted that as global markets continue to place greater emphasis on sustainability, Botswana must ensure that its businesses remain competitive by embracing responsible production, resource efficiency and sound environmental governance.
Olebile said the Green Mark provides businesses with a platform to demonstrate these commitments while contributing meaningfully to Botswana’s broader development objectives.
The initiative ultimately positions sustainability not merely as a corporate responsibility consideration, but as an increasingly important component of competitiveness, investment readiness and Botswana’s longer-term economic transformation.
