Botswana Telecommunications Corporation (BTC) has confirmed the appointment of Jürgen Peschel as its new Chief Executive Officer (CEO), effective 01 July 2025, succeeding Anthony Masunga, who vacated the role in August 2024.
Peschel’s appointment, announced by BTC’s Board of Directors this week, follows a rigorous and competitive recruitment process and remains subject to regulatory approval.
A German national, Peschel brings to BTC more than three decades of extensive international leadership experience across the telecommunications, information technology, digitisation, and fintech sectors. His career spans Europe, North America, and several emerging markets, including Africa and the Caribbean, where he has led transformative initiatives at both group and local operator levels.
Renowned for his ability to guide organisations through digital evolution, Peschel has consistently driven innovation in product development and service delivery, while maintaining a strong focus on customer experience and sustainable profitability.
He played a pivotal role in the rollout of M-Pesa, the globally acclaimed mobile money platform, and has held senior executive roles at leading telecommunications companies such as Deutsche Telekom and Vodafone. Most recently, he served as CEO and Managing Director of 9mobile (formerly Etisalat Nigeria), where he guided one of Nigeria’s key telecom operators through a critical period of market repositioning and digital innovation.
In addition to his industry expertise, Peschel holds a Master of Science in Computer Science from the University of Ulm in Germany, having completed his thesis in Artificial Intelligence at the University of Manitoba, Canada. He also holds a degree in Business Administration from Université de Saint-Boniface in Canada, and completed an Executive Management Development Programme at IMD in Switzerland.
While welcoming Peschel to his new role, the BTC Board also extended its appreciation to Boitumelo Paya for her capable leadership as Acting CEO following Masunga’s departure.
