BTC boosts voice call quality with new tech
  • Tsaone Segaetsho

Botswana Telecommunications Corporation Limited (BTC) Chief Marketing Officer, Mike Siachitema, has positioned the company’s newly launched Voice over LTE (VoLTE) service as a strategic technological advancement that elevates voice communication onto the Long-Term Evolution (LTE) network, widely recognised as 4G.

Historically reserved for data and internet services, the LTE network will now also carry voice traffic, enabling customers to benefit from superior call clarity delivered via high-speed infrastructure. With this rollout, BTC becomes the first mobile network operator in Botswana to introduce VoLTE to the market.

Listed on the Botswana Stock Exchange (BSE), BTC has underscored that the introduction of VoLTE marks a significant milestone in its innovation roadmap, reinforcing its commitment to delivering a more reliable and seamless calling experience. Siachitema said the launch reflects the company’s continued leadership in redefining voice communication and enhancing customer experience.

He noted that VoLTE allows customers to make voice calls while simultaneously browsing the internet or sending messages, without dropped calls or service interruptions. The service is provided at no additional cost and requires no applications, downloads or changes in user behaviour.

Siachitema described VoLTE as “one among plenty of planned steps towards improving the customer experience for our BTC customers,” adding that the rollout demonstrates the company’s ongoing commitment to transforming everyday communication.

“We want our customers to experience a new level of clarity, speed, and reliability when they make a voice call. VoLTE delivers crystal-clear HD voice quality, near-instant call setup, and allows customers to stay connected online while on a call; all provided at the same voice and SMS rates they are used to,” he said.

The launch comes against the backdrop of BTC’s strong financial performance for FY2025, during which the company reported revenue of P1.49 billion and achieved a seven-year high in its share price. The introduction of VoLTE is described as a next-generation technology that delivers tangible improvements to the overall calling experience.

BTC is majority-owned by the Government of Botswana, which holds a 54.16 per cent stake in the company.
