BTC Appoints Kewakae As Interim Chairperson
  • Tsaone Segaetsho

Botswana Telecommunications Corporation (BTC), a Botswana Stock Exchange-listed telecommunications entity, has announced the appointment of Thato Kewakae as interim chairperson following the retirement of Mokgethi Magapa.

The announcement was made at the company’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) held in Gaborone this week.

Kewakae has served as an independent non-executive director at BTC since 2021. In addition, the AGM confirmed the appointment of Letshego CEO, Kgotso Bannalotlhe, as a non-executive director. Shareholders also ratified the appointment of Mr Jürgen Peschel as Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and Executive Director, “reaffirming his mandate to lead BTC’s transformation and turnaround strategy.”

“BTC expresses its gratitude to the outgoing board members for their dedicated service and looks forward to further strengthening its governance as it continues its transformational drive, operational efficiency, customer focus, and digital growth,” the BTC board said.

The board described Kewakae as a seasoned business professional with extensive experience in business and ICT, spanning multiple industries. His career has encompassed leadership in the private sector, consultancy, and support services for both government and private enterprises.

At the time of his appointment as a director in 2021, the board highlighted his strong track record, noting his six-year tenure as Managing Director at Cabling for Africa (Pty) Ltd, Botswana. He previously served as Information Systems Manager at the Botswana Institute for Development Policy Analysis (BIDPA), Chief Operations Officer at Botswana Post, and Chief Information Officer at the same organisation. Kewakae has also served on the board of the Botswana Housing Corporation, where he was a member of the Finance/Audit and HR Committees.

On the academic front, Kewakae holds a Master of Business Administration from the University of Botswana and a Bachelor of Engineering (Computer Science) from the Birla Institute of Technology in India. He has also completed the Executive Development Programme at the University of Stellenbosch in Cape Town and a Project Management course at Wits University.
