A promotional event for the English edition of the fifth volume of Xi Jinping: The Governance of China was held in Johannesburg, South Africa, on Wednesday, attracting an audience of around 200 participants.
Attendees noted that the new volume captures the most recent developments in Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era. It articulates the defining features, practical pathways, and notable achievements of China’s modernisation journey, while offering valuable insights for countries across the Global South pursuing their own development ambitions.
China and South Africa—both key BRICS members and significant actors within the Global South—will jointly advance the 10 partnership actions for modernisation, champion China’s four major global initiatives, and contribute to the broader revitalisation and progress of the Global South, as well as to the shared vision of China–Africa modernisation, they said.
Maropene Ramokgopa, South Africa’s Minister in the Presidency for Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation, remarked that the book addresses critical themes, including China’s pathway to modernisation, its poverty alleviation efforts, global development cooperation, and advances in technological innovation.
She noted that it offers “a valuable window and inspiration for the Global South into how China interprets and responds to global challenges”.
Ramokgopa added that South Africa and China remain steadfast partners in promoting multilateralism and collective action to accelerate development, particularly by enhancing synergies between China’s Belt and Road Initiative and South Africa’s National Development Plan 2030.
Cedric Frolick, House Chairperson of the National Assembly, said the volume provides a comprehensive blueprint for China’s future development trajectory and gives South Africa a clearer view of China’s evolving domestic vision and foreign policy priorities.
He noted that the principles of putting people first, advancing green development, promoting common prosperity, and fostering a community with a shared future for humanity offer significant guidance to countries striving to modernise their economies and enhance governance capacity.
During the event, guests received copies of the English edition of the newly released volume. Participants also engaged in discussions on a range of topics, including the exchange of modernisation experiences, global governance and the Global South, and high-quality Belt and Road cooperation.
The event was co-hosted by the State Council Information Office of China, China International Communications Group, and the Chinese Embassy in South Africa.
