Debswana’s leadership recently shared insights into how the organisation is leveraging digital transformation as a strategic enabler of long-term value creation. The discussion was led by Debswana’s Head of Information and Technology Integration, Molemisi Sechaba, during SAP Connect Day Botswana, held at Hotel 430 in Gaborone.
“Technology must serve as a core lever for business excellence,” said Sechaba. “Debswana’s journey with automation is not new. The company has operated a fully automated sort house for the past 25 years. More recent successes, such as the deployment of autonomous drills at Orapa, Letlhakane and Damtshaa Mines (OLDM), demonstrate how technology can directly advance critical safety and health objectives.”
Sechaba also introduced Debswana’s Future Smart Connected Mine (FSCM) vision, which encourages the organisation to view every aspect of its operations through a technology lens in order to build the capabilities required for the future.
“We must focus more on substance than appearance, ensuring that every technology investment is anchored in delivering measurable business outcomes,” he said.
He further highlighted the importance of robust governance structures and genuine functional integration, emphasising that sustainable transformation requires people, systems and processes to operate as a unified whole rather than through isolated collaboration.
Also speaking at the event, Debswana IT Manager for Enterprise Resource Planning, Sekgabo Moloi, reflected on what distinguishes organisations that successfully monetise data from those that do not.
According to Moloi, the key differentiator lies in an organisation’s ability to generate actionable insights from data rather than merely storing it. To unlock this value, businesses must ensure that data is fully integrated across the enterprise.
He noted that Debswana is actively advancing this approach through the strengthening of its Integrated Business Planning (IBP) capabilities, creating stronger alignment between Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) and non-ERP systems to support informed decision-making and operational excellence.
